Grape: 70% Barbera and 30% Nebbiolo

Tasting Notes: It’s a clever blend with the Barbera giving colour and body, while the Nebbiolo provides tannins, without being overbearing or impenetrable. The result is an easy drinking, yet structured wine. You’ll find dark berries and plums, as well as some spice and that typical Italian aniseed-chinoto character. Juicy and well balanced with good firmish tannins. It’s leathery, slightly gamey, savoury and entirely worth your while. Red cherries, fennel seeds and sage with plums laying down the bass line. Has a little rose petal mouth perfume. Bright acid and assertive tannin but not at all foreboding as a youngster. Match with game meat dishes.”Drink/cellar now to 2018

Producer Info: Danilo Drocco, winemaker at the majestic Fontanafredda Estate makes the Maretti Langhe Rosso. Drocco is a top winemaker, Robert Parker describing him as ‘one of the great names of Piedmontese winemaking.’ The large and perfectly situated estate, a showpiece of the region, underwent a comprehensive overhaul in the 1990s after decades of decline. Drocco was hired in 1998 to revitalise the Estate and resurrect its wines to their former glory. By all accounts he has succeeded, with his top Barolo and Barbaresco now receiving 90+ points from Parker.
